The Mu Chapter Educational Foundation is a new component of the fraternity support system. It is a 501(c)3 Internal Revenue Service-approved organization. The initial funding of the foundation has been established by a small number of alumni brothers, with major funding and challenge grants from Bert Harrop '61. The corpus of the foundation in mid-2007 was approximately $100,000. The mission of the foundation is to fund educational programs for the members of Mu Chapter and, from time to time, for the Cornell student community. These programs are intended to be activities that enhance the Greek experience that would not be otherwise available. Such educational programs are expected to be similar to programs that will be offered to non-Greek students in the living and learning houses that are becoming the center of the Cornell student experience. Scholarships and grants may also be made to deserving students based on need and/or competitive performance in defined activities. It is hoped that a well-managed foundation will attract larger gifts from alumni who are searching for a way to support the fraternity on a tax-deductible basis, or who would like to make a bequest that will benefit the fraternity in perpetuity. It is also hoped that alumni will recognize the need for ongoing operating support of the fraternity, and in so doing, will continue to be generous to the Heritage Fund, and limit contributions to the foundation to larger gifts (when tax deductibility is important) and bequests. The creation of the foundation was conceived by the alumni board several years ago. It was the stated intention at that time to ensure a group of foundation trustees who would see to the stated goals of the foundation. The current trustees are: James H. Keene III '57 Jarett Wait '80 Steve Hobbs '80 James W. Palmer '60 George ("Bert") Harrop '61 Alumni who wish additional information or who would like to make a gift or bequest are invited to contact any one of the trustees.
